Coat of Arms

The History

The Society submitted the design for the Coat of Arms in 1990 , with the Grant of Arms being made on 18 March 1992. The Arms were presented to Norfolk & Norwich Genealogical Society in April 1993. The Coat of Arms is on display on the entrance to Kirby Hall and inside the Library hanging on the wall at the end furthest away from the entrance, as well as forming part of the website logo and adorning the Norfolk Ancestor journal.

The Design

This contains a Norfolk ram (with a golden fleece for a necklace) and wheatsheaves on the shield. These elements represent the rural nature of the county and in particular wool which was the source of much wealth. The blue balls represent a family joined by oak leaves to form a family tree.

The Motto

The latin "Præterita Scrutari" translates to "Researching the past".
