HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY
(formerly the Norfolk & Norwich Genealogical Society - Founded 1968)
Originally the Society acted as a publishing body under the name of the Norfolk & Norwich Genealogical Society. With the growth of interest in genealogy and family history in 1996 the Society reformed as the Norfolk Family History Society with the aim of representing the wider interests of members reseaching their ancestors in Norfolk.
In 1987 the Society was able to purchase new headquarters in Norwich thanks to generous support from the Kirby Permanent Endowment Fund. In 1999 the Society moved into the former Gospel Hall opposite St Giles church, Norwich which was named Kirby Hall, so named in recognition of further financial support given by the F.M. Kirby Foundation Inc. The new premises at Kirby Hall were necessary to accomodate the Society's ever expanding library of genealogical resources and also serve as the Society's Headquarters as well as providing an excellent venue for meetings.
The Norfolk Family History Society continues to publish information relating to genealogy in Norfolk as well as our quarterly journal, The Norfolk Ancestor which is issued free to members. We are also a Member of the Federation of Family History Societies.
Groups of the Society operate in East, West, and South Norfolk, Norwich and London. Full details of meetings, venues and programmes are given in The Norfolk Ancestor and on the website under Noticeboard > Meetings.
