Norfolk Ancestor - past editions

The Society has put copies of past Norfolk Ancestors onto CD.  One CD covers the twelve issues from 2002 to 2004.  The cost is £5.00 (£6.00 if you want us to post a copy in the UK). I am hoping that this is the first of a number of new CDs which will be available.

Aylsham and area

I would like to write about various books we stock covering the Aylsham.

The Aylsham Local History Group have published a number of books over the past few years

Aylsham in 1821  - one of only a few survivors of the 1821 census giving the names of all of the heads of families (£3.50 inc p&p)

Aylsham in the Seventeenth Century – based on the Aylsham Rental, a complete record of landholding in part of the town in the early seventeenth century, lists the landowners and gives a description of what they held. (£8.50 inc. p&p)

Aylsham Millgate – the original was published in 1993.  This version contains three extra chapters and more detailed work on the Anchor Inn.  Chapters cover navigation, the water mill and the families living in the area. (£13.00 inc. p&p)

Aylsham Directories 1793 – 1937 – first published in 2004 this book predates the CD which contains similar information.  There are entries from 47 different directories, most of which are not available on the CD. (£13.50 inc. p&p)

A History of Aylsham Pubs – goes into details on twenty different public houses and then talks about another six that have disappeared.  There are lots of names of publicans and if your ancestors lived in Aylsham there is a good chance they would have spent time here. (£10.00 inc p&p)

A Survey Map of Aylsham 1839 – sets out the owners and occupiers of land in Aylsham in 1837. Each name is numbered and the numbers can be located on the maps so that we know that Peter Digby lived in a cottage owned by John Smith on Pinfold Street.  (£10.00 inc p&p)

We also have an Aylsham CD in the popular Gen CD range.  It contains directories and poll books for the period 1768 to 1925.  Some of the content is the same as the book Aylsham Directories 1793 – 1937 but it does contain some extra material. (£7.00 inc p&p)

Cassini maps – Aylsham appears on the North East Norfolk map.  There are two maps 1838 (£7.50 in package and postage) and interwar (£8.50 in p&p)

If you want any of the above or anything else from the bookstall please contact me at Kirby Hall.

Book Reviews

The Book of Brundall & Braydeston

In October Halsgrove Publishing will be issuing a new book in their Community History range entitled The Book of Brundall and Braydeston.  We will write our own review when we receive a copy; in the meantime this is what the publisher says about it

" Full of history, these adjoining parishes, once independent in their own right, lie a few miles east of Norwich in Norfolk. Our story offers a picture of life in a riverside settlement in the east of England.  There is much to discover; Stone Age and Roman finds, entries in the Domesday Book as Brundala and Bregestuna, rises and falls in the fortune of both communities, and in a WWI military hospital which in WWII was home to Italian prisoner of war.  At various times in our history we have also been a tourist attraction. Home to a hat shop, and seen multi-million pound businesses come and go.  The Book relates how the extensive river frontage has influenced local life and why Brundall has two railway stations.  Braydeston once had a much larger population than Brundall.  Though it is now smaller the community is active and centres round the church of St Michael and All Angels where the 1662 form of Matins is still in use. "

The book can be purchased from the Society for £19.99 (£22.75 including UK postage and packing).
