Norfolk Family History Society Coat of Arms

Genealogical Projects

Introduction

Over the years scores of volunteers have contributed untold hours of work on projects for the benefit of the wider membership. A substantial number are currently engaged on the projects described on these pages.

The popularity of personal computers is a great asset in compiling transcripts, indexes, etc. and making parts of the collection available to those who cannot travel to Kirby Hall as well as the protection of these assets from permanent loss in the event of fire or theft. Most project tasks now call for a degree of computer literacy although we are happy to receive manuscript contributions from family historians engaged in 'private' projects (see below).

Volunteering

Project activities of the Society are co-ordinated by the Projects Officer who is a Trustee and reports to the Committee. He is responsible for keeping members informed of developments through the Society's quarterly journal, The Norfolk Ancestor. Any reader wishing to become involved is encouraged to fill in the Projects Volunteer Application Form or to contact the Projects Team in person or via email.

Current Projects

Details of each project can be found by following the links.

Private Projects

We would ask Members to supply details of any projects they are pursuing which are of a wider interest than their own immediate family histories. (eg. village studies, occupations & professions, historical events, Census and Register transcription etc.). In this way there could be scope for comparison, collaboration and, via occasional reports in the Ancestor, useful publicity.

In conclusion

On behalf of the Society, the Society would like to thank all volunteer transcribers, past and present, without whose diligence, co-operation and sacrifice of their spare time, very little of the progress reported here would have been made.
