The Family Tree Appeal
For many years the Norfolk Family History Society has accepted and stored family trees donated by its members, but in 1996 it was decided to launch the Family Tree Appeal to expand this important resource for genealogists.
The collection of Family Trees held by the Society is not restricted to Norfolk families but covers families with roots outside Norfolk as well.
Members are encouraged to deposit copies of their family tree(s) with the Society once they have plotted at least 3 or 4 generations of a family line for the benefit of fellow genealogists tracing the same surname(s).
For details of surnames covered by the Family Tree collection held by the Society see the List of Family Trees in the Library.
Submission Guidelines
With so many different family tree layouts now available and in use it would be inappropriate to insist upon a particular version. However, we do ask that members observe the following guidelines when preparing their family trees for submission to the Society's collection:
- For filing purposes it is important that the compiler emphasises the particular family surname under which (s)he intends the record to be filed: in other words to identify the main 'stem' of a particular tree. It also helps to put in the geographical location of events, and each tree should be endorsed with the compiler's membership number and address in case other members should wish to make contact about possible mutual family connections or surnames of interest, .
- Accuracy and originality are important aspects. Care should be taken to distinguish between entries which are derived from a proven source, e.g. birth/marriage/death records, wills, etc. and speculative information which should be clearly endorsed as such. The results of any collaborative work and data relating to living persons should be approved and endorsed by the people concerned, whilst related pedigrees compiled by someone else may be referred to but should not be repeated.
Please send your family tree(s), quoting your membership number, name and full postal address, to:
