Norfolk Parishes
The county of Norfolk has over 740 parishes. Some have merged or been lost to time as people relocated or geography of the county changed. Knowing the geography of parishes can help a family historian determine the next logical records to research if ancestors can not be located in the obvious "home" parish.
This guide lists all Norfolk parishes alphabetically and hopefully will assist researchers to more readily organize their family history search patterns. In addition to a listing of all parishes, each parish listed on this website includes:
- A Registration District map which shows the location of the parish
- A list of Contiguous* parishes
- A link to the SoG Parish Registers for that parish held at the Society of Genealogists
- A link to the Family History Library Catalogue entries for that parish
- A link to the Norfolk GENUKI web page for that parish (as available)
- A link to Norfolk Transcription Archive on the Internet for that parish (as available)
- A link to IGI Batch Numbers on the Internet for that parish (as available)
- Other links as appropriate & available

* Norfolk Contiguous Parishes
Contiguous parishes are those parishes whose borders touch. They are adjoining parishes. Bear in mind that a parish may not be one continuous land mass. Some parishes have one or more detached areas which exist outside of the main geographical boundaries of the parish. Detached parts of parishes can cause a single parish to have many more neighboring parishes than usual.
Similarly, the "next parish over" may have actually been outside the county. The point is that we as family historians should not let parish or county boundaries fool us into believing that our ancestors never crossed those invisible lines of demarcation.
Contiguous Parishes for other Counties
The Norfolk Contiguous Parish web site provides cross-referenced links between adjacent Norfolk parishes. We know of no other similar design for listing the contiguous parishes of other counties. The Norfolk Family History Society would be delighted to assist other societies or individuals who would like to emulate this design. Here are some other options for finding contiguous parishes.
- Cambridgeshire Contiguous Parishes
Listing of contigous parishes for Cambridgeshire. - Church of England Parishes in County Durham
For each parish there is a map showing the location of the parish, a list of adjacent parishes, the date of creation of the parish and details of any parish(es) created from that parish, and details of surviving parish registers, microfilm copies and indexes. - GENUKI Parish Search
Online searchable database of the geographic location of churches, registration districts, and more in the United Kingdom. Use this to locate parishes next to or nearby your parish of interest.

The list of Norwich contiguous parishes appears courtesy of Derek Powles. Norwich parishes are listed under the letter N as "Norwich St. Augustine" by example. So if you are looking for "St. Augustine" parish in Norwich, look under the letter N.
