Members Interests (PDF document)

SURNAME

The surname you are researching - NOT an individual.

Eg: SMITH meaning SMITH but not including SMYTH
          BROWN(E) meaning BROWN or BROWNE
DAVIS, etc meaning DAVIS and all spelling variants.

COUNTY

This means you are restricting your researches of the surname given to a particular county or country. For counties, please use the Chapman Codes. These apply to the county names before re-organisation in 1974, with the boundaries as they were in about 1880. If you wish to specify a country, use England (ENG), Scotland (SCT), Wales (WLS), Ireland (IRL) or All Countries (ALL). For other countries, please use the lettering used on international car plates. If you are not restricting your researches to any one geographical region then enter ALL.

Eg: NFK meaning your interest is in NORFOLK only
LND meaning your interest is in the CITY OF LONDON only
ENG meaning your interest is in ENGLAND only
B meaning your interest is in BELGIUM only.

AREA

This means you are further restricting your researches to part of the aforementioned county/country.
- For counties other than Norfolk enter N, NW, SE, etc. as appropriate.
- Norfolk has been divided into seven areas which are illustrated on a map and detailed with the Norfolk hundreds and boroughs below.

Eg: ENG NW meaning NORTH WEST counties of ENGLAND
AUS SE meaning SOUTH EAST AUSTRALIA
          SFK N meaning NORTH SUFFOLK
NFK YM meaning GT YARMOUTH AND DISTRICT
          NFK CN meaning CENTRAL NORFOLK
          NFK meaning all of NORFOLK.

PERIOD

This means you are further restricting your research of the given surname in the given geographical area to a particular time.

Eg: NFK NC 16c-19c meaning NORWICH AND DISTRICT 1501-1900
BRK PRE 1760 meaning ALL BERKSHIRE before the year 1760
